Jeptha Franklin Warnock came to Erath County in 1898 and later settled near Bluff Dale. In 1908 he opened a hardware store and in 1915 built this structure to house his business. Here Warnock provided supplies and implements to the surrounding agricultural area. A community landmark, the Warnock Store features a brick parapet, wooden storefront, and transom windows typical of early commercial buildings once common in Texas. The Story
Jeptha Franklin Warnock reached Erath County in 1898 and opened a hardware store in Bluff Dale in 1908, building this brick-parapeted storefront to house it in 1915. From here he supplied the tools and implements that kept the surrounding farms and ranches running. With its wooden storefront and transom windows, the building is a well-preserved example of the small-town commercial architecture that once lined Main Streets across Texas.
Why it matters
The country hardware store was the supply hub of rural agricultural life, and Warnock's surviving building preserves the look of the early Texas Main Street.

The Putnam brothers assembled 25,000 acres on Upper Berry Creek in 1879, building a three-story commissary for travelers and pioneering some of the area's first cattle dipping vats. The land passed through several owners before the I.T. Houston family bought its heart in 1942, and four generations have worked the ranch since.
W. D. and Essie Gafford House
Lipan, TX
Built around 1916 for William Doyle and Essie Gafford, this house is a well-preserved example of the Craftsman bungalow style popular in early-twentieth-century America. The Gaffords ran the general store in the Lipan community for nearly two decades while farming and ranching, and W. D. Gafford later established a produce business and the local livestock auction in Mineral Wells. The home stayed in the family throughout the century.
Erath County Poor Farm Cemetery
Stephenville, TX
Acting on a state mandate to care for the destitute, Erath County opened a poor farm in 1881, where paupers and petty offenders lived and labored raising cotton and peanuts, with a cemetery set aside on the grounds. The farm ran for more than fifty years until New Deal relief programs made it obsolete, and its unnamed dead lay unmarked until Boy Scouts and volunteers began restoring the graves in the 1980s.
Lanham Mill Community
Glen Rose, TX
After coming to Texas from Tennessee around 1870, William and Mary Lanham settled where the Paluxy River meets White Bluff Creek and helped petition the state to carve out Somervell County. By 1877 Lanham ran a grist mill on the Paluxy, adding a cotton gin a few years later, and a rural community of farms, churches, a school, and a cemetery grew up around the works until fire destroyed the operation in 1898. The settlement slowly faded, and today only the Lanham Mill Cemetery marks where it stood.
