Founded in 1890, this congregation began with twelve charter members led by German missionary Julius Schroeder. Early worship services were held in homes and in a local school building. The Rev. H. F. Daude was called to serve the church in 1891, and in 1901 the first sanctuary was erected. It was replaced by a second structure in 1925. Some worship services were conducted in the German language until 1949. A new sanctuary was erected in 1975. The oldest church in Buckholts, Hope Lutheran serves a predominantly German and Czech membership.

The Story
Founded in 1890 under German missionary Julius Schroeder, Hope Lutheran Church began with twelve charter members worshiping in homes and a local schoolhouse. The Rev. H. F. Daude arrived in 1891, and the first sanctuary rose in 1901, followed by later buildings in 1925 and 1975. German-language services continued until 1949 in a congregation still rooted in the area's German and Czech families.
Why it matters
As the oldest church in Buckholts, it preserves the immigrant heritage of central Texas, where German and Czech settlers carried their faith and language across generations.

Buckholts Brethren Church
Buckholts, TX
Bohemian and Moravian immigrants of the Unity of the Brethren — a faith tracing to the Czech reformer Jan Hus — began arriving in Texas as early as 1848. Buckholts residents held their first Brethren services in the Czech language in 1894 and formally organized in 1907, raising a wooden sanctuary in 1913. Only around 1951, with a new building, did the congregation begin worshiping in English, adopting its present name in 1959.
Buckholts SPJST Lodge Hall
Buckholts, TX
In 1879 Central Texas Czechs founded the SPJST, a fraternal society offering members both social life and insurance. Members from Cameron, Marak, and Buckholts chartered Lodge No. 15 in 1907 and dedicated their first hall here in 1911; after a storm and a later arson fire, the present octagonal frame dance hall rose in 1936. For generations it has hosted dances, barbecues, and fundraisers — and drew country, polka, and western-swing greats like Bob Wills and Johnny Horton, its shows broadcast on Taylor radio in the 1950s.
Hope Lutheran Memorial Park
Buckholts, TX
The German Evangelical Lutheran Hoffnung (Hope) Church of Buckholts bought the first acre and a half of this cemetery in 1902, anticipating its members' needs. The earliest graves, of Josef Neuman and J.C. Richter, date its use to 1902-1904, and the congregation formally recorded the deed in 1911. Expanded and cared for over the decades, and overseen by an association since 1962, the grounds preserve much of the German community's heritage.
S. S. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church
Cameron, TX
Drawn by fellow immigrant Joseph Russek, Czech families settled this corner of Milam County in the 1880s, first hearing Mass in the Kaspar Kubecka home in 1883. The Kubeckas donated land in 1889, and a wooden church—named for Saints Cyril and Methodius, patrons of the Moravian people—was dedicated in 1905, offering worship in Latin, German, and Czech and anchoring the community's social life for generations.
