The Story
Carved from the vast Young and Bexar territories, Hartley County was created in 1876 and formally organized in 1891 in the Texas Panhandle. It honors brothers Oliver Cromwell Hartley and Rufus K. Hartley, both noted members of the Texas Bar. The town of Hartley became its county seat.

First Hartley County Jail
Hartley, TX
This sturdy little jail was built in 1892 during a land boom that briefly swelled the population of the Texas Panhandle's Hartley County. It served law and order for only about a decade, falling out of use as a jail by 1903. Recognized as a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark in 1966, it survives as one of the county's earliest public buildings.
XIT General Office
Channing, TX
The legendary XIT Ranch sprawled across three million acres of the Texas Panhandle, land the state traded to investors in exchange for building its capitol in Austin. In 1898–99 the ranch raised this handsome general office in Channing, hauling in five railroad cars of brick and dressing it in Victorian detail — a wraparound porch, decorative eave brackets, and turned columns meant to impress visitors amid the open range. It ran the vast operation until 1912.
Hartley County Courthouse
Channing, TX
Hartley County was organized in 1891, and its county seat see-sawed until XIT Ranch interests helped move it to Channing in 1896—where the old frame courthouse was dismantled and hauled to the new town. In 1906 a proper Beaux Arts courthouse rose in its place, its triumphal-arch entrance and paired Roman Ionic columns lit and watered by its own well and power plant. Vaults and jury quarters were added over the following decades as the Panhandle county matured.
Moore County Courthouse
Dumas, TX
Louis Dumas donated this square and laid out the townsite in 1891, and Moore County organized its government the following year, raising its first courthouse in 1893. The original was replaced by the present brick building, erected by C. S. Lambie and Company for $155,000 and occupied by county officials in August 1931. Both courthouses have safeguarded county records and served as the civic heart of Dumas and the surrounding Panhandle.
