Gribble Springs Baptist Church

Twenty-three members of the congregation from the Pond Creek community established Gribble Springs Baptist Church in 1871. The Rev. W.C. West served as the first pastor. Gribble Springs Missionary Baptist Church reorganized in 1896, and members have remained active from that time forward. The congregation first met in a schoolhouse, before building a sanctuary in 1904. Since then, the church building has been replaced twice through the hard work of the membership. As Denton County becomes increasingly urban, the church continues to serve the community of Gribble Springs, where it remains a reminder of early life in this area. (2006)

The Story
In 1871, twenty-three members from the Pond Creek community founded Gribble Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. W.C. West as its first pastor. The congregation met in a schoolhouse before raising its first sanctuary in 1904, and rebuilt the church twice in the years that followed. As Denton County grows increasingly urban, the church endures as a reminder of the area's rural pioneer roots.

Green Valley Schools
Aubrey vicinity, TX
Fertile land and timber drew settlers to this corner of Denton County around 1870, to a crossroads community first called Toll Town and later renamed Green Valley by schoolteacher Henry Clay Wilmoth. A subscription school opened in a vacant farmhouse in 1878, and after the district organized in 1884, local carpenters built a one-room schoolhouse—the first of three, culminating in a four-room building in 1919. The school gave rural children academic and athletic opportunities until it closed in 1949, and its last building still serves as a community center.
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church
Denton, TX
Immaculate Conception began about 1890 as a mission of the Dallas Diocese, with the Rev. F. X. Meilinger serving its first Catholics, who worshiped on the second floor of a local barn until a church was built in 1893-94. A Catholic student society took shape in the 1930s, and in 1956 a new brick church replaced the original. Later decades brought a parish center and, from 1970, a hospital ministry and outreach to those in need.
Cooper Creek School
Denton, TX
Families were settling the Cooper Creek area of Denton County before the Civil War, and when Texas created a county school system in 1876 the community organized its own one-room school for 39 pupils. A larger four-room building followed in 1919, complete with wood stoves, a well, and a three-acre garden. More than a schoolhouse, it hosted plays, revivals, and prohibition lectures — and in the 1918 smallpox epidemic a local doctor used it to treat stricken children.
First Baptist Church of Denton
Denton, TX
Twelve men and women gathered in Denton County's log-cabin courthouse in 1858 to organize what they called the Union Baptist Church, meeting for years in borrowed Masonic and Presbyterian halls. Renamed First Baptist Church of Denton by about 1880, the congregation raised a succession of buildings—a white frame structure, a larger hall lost to fire in 1917, and a columned brick church in 1918—as its membership grew with the town. Across generations it became woven into Denton's civic and religious life.
