George Alexander Spratt

George A. Spratt (1870-1934): Historic farm where Spratt performed aeronautical experiments that aided Wilbur and Orville Wright in their invention of the airplane. His knowledge helped diagnose an issue with the Wright's 1901 glider. Spratt gave the Wright Brothers his idea of simultaneously measuring the lift and drift forces of a surface which helped them determine the 1903 Wright Flyer's wing shape. The Wrights visited here in December of 1906.

The Story

On this Chester County farm at the turn of the 20th century, George A. Spratt pursued the science of flight, running aeronautical experiments during the years when human flight was still a dream. His insight helped Wilbur and Orville Wright diagnose a flaw in their 1901 glider, and his idea of measuring lift and drift forces together informed the wing design of the 1903 Wright Flyer. The Wright brothers thought enough of him to visit here in December 1906.

Why it matters

Spratt is a little-known contributor to the invention of the airplane, a reminder that the Wrights' triumph drew on a wider community of experimenters who shared their knowledge freely.

First Iron Bridge

Pottstown, PA · est. 1953

In the 1840s American railroads were racing ahead of the engineering that carried them, and wooden bridges rotted and burned under ever-heavier trains. In the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad's Pottstown blacksmith shop, engineer Richard B. Osborne answered that problem with a truss built entirely of iron — completed in 1845 and reckoned the first of its kind in the country. It was a modest span with an outsized future, pointing the way from timber trestles to the iron and steel bridges that would knit the industrializing nation together.

Duryea Drive

Reading, PA · est. 1951

This winding road from City Park up to Reading's landmark Pagoda takes its name from Charles E. Duryea, an automobile pioneer who used its slopes from 1900 to 1907 as a proving ground for his cars. Duryea built one of America's first successful gasoline automobiles, and the hill let him test the machines' power against the very grades that stymied early motorcars.

Skew Bridge

Reading, PA · est. 1951

By the 1850s Pennsylvania was crisscrossed with railroads hungry for engineering that could carry tracks over roads and streams at awkward angles. A skew bridge solves that problem by setting its arch on a slant, forcing every stone to be cut on a precise spiral so the whole span holds without a central keystone. Designed by Richard Osborn for the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1857, this stone arch was long admired as one of the finest examples of the form in the country.

Robert Fulton 1765-1815

Robert Fulton, born in this corner of Lancaster County in 1765, first made his way as a portrait painter in Philadelphia and Europe before turning his restless mind to machines. In 1807 his steamboat—the North River Steamboat, remembered as the Clermont—proved that steam could reliably move a vessel against the current. He also experimented with an early submarine, the Nautilus, floating mines, and improvements to canals.
