Freeport National Bank (Freeport Sulphur Company Building)

The Freeport Sulphur Company was instrumental in the founding and early development of the city of Freeport and the region. It was incorporated on July 12, 1912, and then organized the Freeport Townsite Company with the purpose of developing a city on the west bank of the Brazos River. The city was designed to be free of wharf and dock charges to facilitate the importation of goods and supplies into the town, especially to the sulphur mines at Bryan Mound, and to expedite the exportation of sulphur to national and international markets. In 1913 the Freeport National Bank constructed a one-story edifice with a built-in vault on land acquired from the Freeport Townsite Company. In 1918 the Freeport Sulphur Company purchased adjoining property, erected a new two-story building and added a second floor to the bank structure. The Freeport National Bank remained in business until 1955, when the Freeport Sulphur Company bought the property and maintained offices here until 1973. This Classical Revival structure with brick corbelling, a flat roof, multiple bays, and flat arched windows reflects popular commercial building trends of the early 20th century. The Story

The Freeport Sulphur Company literally built the town around it: incorporated in 1912, it laid out Freeport on the west bank of the Brazos as a duty-free port to move sulphur from the Bryan Mound mines to world markets. The Freeport National Bank raised this one-story building with a built-in vault in 1913, and by 1918 the sulphur company had bought adjoining land and added a second story. The Classical Revival structure, with its brick corbelling and flat-arched windows, reflects the confident commercial architecture of an early-20th-century boomtown.

Why it matters

It shows how a single extractive industry could conjure an entire American city, planning its port, its bank, and its street grid to serve the flow of a raw material to global markets.

Schuster Home

Freeport, TX

Built in 1917 on part of the Freeport town site, the Schuster home was raised largely by George Schuster's carpenter sons on heavy cedar blocks, with a wraparound porch, tapered columns, and milled cypress walls that made it one of Freeport's first and finest wooden houses. Family members lived in it for generations, keeping much of the original furniture in place. In 2003 the Schuster descendants formed a corporation and entrusted the house to a historical society, which restored it over a decade and opened it to the public as a museum.

Allen Place

Quintana, TX

Built in 1883 by the Jarvis family of Old Quintana, this well-known boarding house long served travelers and residents on the Brazoria County coast. It weathered a century of Gulf hurricanes, including the devastating Hurricane Carla of 1961, and was later restored by owner B. T. Allen. The surviving structure recalls the small resort and coastal communities that once dotted the Texas shore.

Quintana Cemetery

Quintana, TX

Just beyond the storm levee lies one of the last traces of Quintana, a bustling seaport in the days of the Republic of Texas. The cemetery began as the family plot of Henry and Josephine Seaburn, who ran homebuilding and shipbuilding ventures here; their infant child's 1846 burial is its earliest known grave. Wind, water, and development erased many markers, and the last burial came in 1942.

Bryan Mound

Freeport, TX

Early in the 20th century, mining engineers found rich sulphur deposits at Bryan Mound, spurring the founding of the Texas Freeport Sulphur Co. in 1912. Their success drove the growth of the Freeport townsite itself. The operation was among Texas's earliest to use the Frasch process—superheated water pumped underground to melt and lift the sulphur—producing five million tons before it closed in 1935.
