HENRY AND ADAM MURR, BORN IN LANCASTER COUNTY, PA. SONS OF MR. AND MRS. JOHN MURR, SERVED 1866-1882 AND 1877-1882, RESPECTIVELY, IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY. AFTER HIS HONORABLE DISCHARGE AT FORT McKAVETT (28 MI NW), HENRY SETTLED HERE ON BEAR CREEK;IN 2 MONTHS ADAM, ALSO HONORABLY DISCHARGED AT FORT McKAVETT, JOINED HIM. HENRY IN 1895 AND ADAM IN 1901 BOUGHT LAND ON EAST COPPERAS CREEK, FOUNDING MURR COMMUNITY. THEY ALSO HAD OTHER BUSINESS INTERESTS. BOTH MEN CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO THE RANCHING INDUSTRY IN KIMBLE COUNTY. DESCENDANTS OWN AND OPERATE MURR RANCHES. (1972)

The Story
Pennsylvania-born brothers Henry and Adam Murr came west as U.S. Army soldiers, and after their honorable discharges at Fort McKavett in the 1880s they settled on the creeks of Kimble County. Buying land in 1895 and 1901, they founded the Murr community and helped build up the county's ranching economy. Their descendants still run Murr Ranches today.
Why it matters
The Murr brothers embody the common frontier path from frontier military service to permanent ranching settlement that populated the Texas Hill Country.

Site of Four Mile Dam
Junction, TX
Chartered in 1896, this dam and its network of irrigation and power ditches were meant to run mills, supply a young town's water, and green the surrounding ranch land. Built of native stone and cypress, the main ditch ran wide and deep, carrying water into the mid-1920s before proving unprofitable. The charter was finally forfeited in 1950.
R. M. Turner Family
Kimble County, TX
In April 1879, R. M. Turner and his bride Emma Scarborough settled on the north bank of the South Llano River, where Turner rose to prominence as a cattle and sheep rancher. Of their ten children, eight reached adulthood, and many stayed to become leading citizens of Kimble County. Best known was son Jack Turner, who conducted the first Angora doe sale in Texas and helped organize the National Angora Goat Breeders Association in 1925.
The Ditch
Menard, TX
Chartered in 1874 by William J. Vaughn and partners, the Vaughn Agricultural and Mechanical Canal Company dug "The Ditch" to bring San Saba River water to the dry Menard valley. By gravity flow it irrigated some 2,000 acres and powered grist mills, running five miles above town to five below beginning in 1876. Ownership passed to Gus Noyes in 1886 and to the Menard Irrigation Company by 1905, which still worked the original dam.
Bank of Menard, 1903
Menard, TX
Built of native stone in 1903, the Bank of Menard answered a real frontier problem: settlers had been keeping their cash in merchants' safes or riding sixty robber-plagued miles to do their banking. A local bank of solid rock signaled that this remote West Texas town had arrived. It stands as a monument to the moment financial institutions caught up with the settlement of the frontier.
