Fairmount Water Works

Centerpiece of Philadelphia's water system, 1815-1909. The neoclassical buildings, designed by Frederick Graff and Frederic Graff, Jr., concealed huge machines that pumped Schuylkill River water to a reservoir above, whence it flowed to the city. Power was originally supplied by Oliver Evans' high-pressure steam engine, the largest of its day. After 1821 the pumps were driven by breast wheels; after 1851, by turbines.

The Story

For nearly a century the Fairmount Water Works stood as the beating heart of Philadelphia's municipal water supply, drawing water from the Schuylkill River and lifting it to a hilltop reservoir from which gravity carried it into the growing city. Designed in an elegant neoclassical style by Frederick Graff and his son, the buildings deliberately dressed heavy industrial machinery in the clothing of a garden pavilion. Power evolved with the century — from Oliver Evans' pioneering high-pressure steam engine, to breast waterwheels, and finally to turbines.

Why it matters

One of the first big-city waterworks in the nation, Fairmount showed that American cities could deliver clean water at scale and made public health engineering a civic showpiece admired around the world.

Graff Memorial

Erected by the City Councils of Philadelphia in 1848, this monument honors Frederick Graff, the engineer who designed and built the Fairmount Water Works on the Schuylkill River. Completed in the 1810s, the Water Works pumped clean water to a growing Philadelphia and became one of the most admired public works in the young nation, drawing sightseers from across America and Europe. Graff's design married engineering ingenuity with graceful classical architecture, setting a standard for American municipal infrastructure.

Walter Golaski (1913-1996)

Walter Golaski, a Polish-American engineer and Drexel graduate, began his career designing machinery for the knitting industry and earned numerous patents. In the 1960s he applied that expertise to medicine, perfecting the Dense Knit Dacron Vascular Prosthesis, the first practical artificial blood vessel. His workshop stood here for many years, and he worked to foster cultural exchange between Poland and the United States.

Frank N. Piasecki (1919-2008)

Frank N. Piasecki was an aviation pioneer who flew the second successful helicopter in the United States and invented the world's first tandem-rotor helicopter, making rotorcraft genuinely practical in the 1940s. The Philadelphia company he founded here evolved into a division of Boeing and a world leader in helicopter production, while his later firm kept pushing the frontier of advanced rotorcraft. He received the National Medal of Technology in 1986.

ENIAC

In 1946, in a lab at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering, J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly unveiled ENIAC — a room-filling machine of some 18,000 vacuum tubes originally built to calculate artillery firing tables for the U.S. Army. Programmed by rewiring and setting switches, it could perform thousands of operations per second, dwarfing every mechanical calculator that came before. From this first general-purpose electronic digital computer descended the machines that now sit on every desk and in every pocket.
