The Story
Daniel Boone, born here in the Oley Valley in 1734, spent his first sixteen years on the family homestead before the Boones pushed south and west into the Carolina and Kentucky backcountry. Long before he became the legendary blazer of the Wilderness Road and a symbol of American frontier daring, he was a Pennsylvania farm boy hunting the woods of Berks County. The homestead a few miles north is preserved today as a state historic site.
Why it matters
It roots one of America's most enduring frontier icons in his Pennsylvania boyhood, connecting the settled colonial East to the westward push that would define the young nation.

Around 1750 a hewn-log trading post rose on this Berks County site, run until 1760 by Conrad Weiser — pioneer settler, judge, and above all the colony's indispensable go-between with Native nations. Fluent in the Iroquois tongue, Weiser negotiated treaties and interpreted at councils during the tense decades when Pennsylvania's fate hinged on its relations with the Six Nations and the Delaware.

The homestead endured long after the Boones departed and is preserved today by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
