Charles Martin Hall 1863-1914. As a youth of 22 he unlocked from nature's grasp the modern metal aluminum giving to the nation the countless benefits of the metal and the aluminum industry which his discovery made possible.
The Story
In the years after the Civil War, American ingenuity was racing to turn laboratory chemistry into world-changing industry, and few breakthroughs matched what a young Ohioan achieved in a woodshed laboratory. Working just after his college years, Charles Martin Hall discovered an inexpensive electrolytic method to extract aluminum, a metal that had until then been rarer and costlier than silver. His process transformed aluminum from a precious curiosity into an everyday material and seeded a major American industry.
Why it matters
Hall's discovery made lightweight, abundant aluminum possible, underpinning everything from kitchenware to the aircraft and aerospace industries and marking one of the great triumphs of American industrial innovation.

Rural Electrification

By the mid-1930s, electricity had transformed America's cities while most of the countryside still lit its homes with kerosene lamps โ in Pennsylvania, three of every four farms had no power at all. This marker recalls how, under the New Deal's push for rural electrification, farmers across western Pennsylvania banded together into consumer-owned cooperatives, pooling federal loans to string wire down the back roads the private utilities had judged unprofitable to serve. Within just five years, fourteen such co-ops had brought light, refrigeration, and electric machinery to families across seven counties.
Kier Refinery Historic Marker

In the early 1850s, years before Edwin Drake's famous 1859 oil well, a Pittsburgh druggist named Samuel M. Kier was already turning a nuisance into an industry. Crude oil kept fouling the salt wells his family worked at Tarentum, so Kier tinkered with distilling it โ and around 1854, on this site, he set up a small five-barrel still to refine that crude into clean-burning 'carbon oil' for lamps. It was, in effect, America's first commercial petroleum refinery, lighting homes before anyone imagined an oil boom.
Pioneer Short-Wave Station

In the early 1920s the airwaves were a frontier, and Pittsburgh's Westinghouse Electric was at its leading edge โ home of KDKA, one of the nation's first commercial broadcasting stations. On this Forest Hills ground in 1923 the company opened a laboratory to push transmission farther than anyone thought practical, guided by engineer Frank Conrad, whose backyard tinkering had helped launch broadcasting itself. The work here proved that short waves, bouncing off the upper atmosphere, could carry a signal clear across oceans โ a discovery that shrank the world.
