Bynum School
Bynum, Hill County, Texas

The first school in Old Bynum community began in 1880 before the settlement had a name. After a store and a post office were built, the area adopted its name from a nearby creek. The school was moved to the new townsite on the railroad in 1905, and an independent school district was organized. Over the years, the following schools consolidated with Bynum: Davis, Grovecreek, part of Honest Ridge, Pecan, Pierce (1905-1914); Watson (1931); Massey, McMurry (1938); Brandon (1953); and Irene (1958). The school now is a historic reminder of the region's heritage.

The Story
Schooling in the Bynum area began in 1880, before the settlement even had a name, and moved to the new railroad townsite in 1905 when an independent district was organized. Over the following decades the school absorbed a long roll of tiny neighboring districts—Davis, Grovecreek, Pecan, Watson, and others—as rural communities consolidated. The building survives as a reminder of the region's one-room-school heritage.

Frazierville Community and School

A family settled a land grant on this Hill County ground in 1852, adding neighboring acreage that gave them timber and spring water. In 1883 a son donated part of the land for a schoolhouse that doubled as a nondenominational church, and the settlement that gathered around it took the family name. Their descendants held the land for well over a century.
Salem Lutheran Church
Malone, TX
This congregation grew from the wave of German immigrants who first settled Washington County and began pushing into Hill County in the 1880s. In June 1886, fifteen families organized the Salem Lutheran Congregation, worshipping in homes while their first building rose. The Salem community it served became a forerunner of nearby Malone.
Abbott Baptist Church
Abbott, TX
Founded in 1876 as the Liberty Grove Baptist Church by thirteen members meeting in a country schoolhouse, this congregation renamed itself for the town of Abbott and moved there in the 1880s. For its first years the flock worshipped in the local Methodist church until it raised its own sanctuary in 1892. Growing steadily, it expanded its buildings and sustained active outreach and missionary work for well over a century.

Abbott, TX
Public schooling in Abbott began in 1885 with a one-story frame schoolhouse crowding 140 pupils and three teachers on the east side of town. A two-story brick building rose on this site in 1911 and served for 55 years, earning full accreditation around 1934 and adding a vocational agriculture program in 1939. As surrounding districts consolidated, the Abbott schools remained a central force in the town's growth.
