Bluff Cemetery

Marker Inscription
Benjamin Weatherly, a veteran of the U.S.-Mexico War and Civil War, donated approximately two acres here for a church and cemetery in the 1870s. The Baptist Church of Christ at Liberty organized here in 1878 and was associated with the burial ground for thirty years before moving to a new location. Weatherly, his wife Sarah (King), and three of their children are buried here. The Bluff Cemetery Committee expanded the graveyard boundaries in the 1940s through purchase of adjoining tracts. The Bluff Cemetery Association, organized in 1986, has more recently been responsible for maintenance of this historic site. The Story
In the 1870s Benjamin Weatherly, who had soldiered in both the U.S.-Mexico War and the Civil War, gave about two acres of Red River County land for a church and burying ground. A Baptist congregation organized here in 1878 and remained tied to the cemetery for three decades before relocating. Weatherly, his wife Sarah, and three of their children lie among the marble, limestone, and granite markers, with the grounds later expanded and now tended by a cemetery association.

John Nance Garner, the Texas statesman nicknamed "Cactus Jack," was born in this house on November 22, 1869. He rose from the Texas Legislature to a long career in the U.S. Congress, serving as Speaker of the House in 1931 before becoming Vice President of the United States in 1933. His marker records a career that carried a Red River County native to the second-highest office in the land.
Five Signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Red River County
Clarksville, TX
On March 2, 1836, delegates at Washington-on-the-Brazos signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, breaking from Mexico. Of the fifty-nine signers, five came from Red River County — Richard Ellis, who presided over the convention, Robert Hamilton, Albert Hamilton Latimer, Samuel Price Carson, and Collin McKinney — more than from any other old district. These men went on to shape the government of the young Republic, and one, McKinney, lent his name to both a county and a city.
