The first Baptist church in Refugio County was organized on April 22, 1855, and met in the Doughty Schoolhouse near Refugio. In 1865, the first sanctuary was erected (5 mi.W) and named for the cattle brand of member and benefactor N. R. McDaniel. the Blanco Baptist Association was organized at the "N2" Church in 1873. In 1888 the fellowship moved to Blanconia where the first sanctuary on this site was built in 1891. One of the oldest Baptist churches in South Texas, Blanconia Church served as a nucleus for growth of area churches and has ordained several pastors. (1985)

The Story
Refugio County's first Baptist congregation organized in 1855, meeting first in the Doughty Schoolhouse before raising a sanctuary in 1865 named for benefactor N. R. McDaniel's "N2" cattle brand. The Blanco Baptist Association formed at that church in 1873, and in 1888 the fellowship moved to Blanconia, building on this site in 1891. One of the oldest Baptist churches in South Texas, it seeded many area congregations.

Frontier churches were the first institutions to knit scattered South Texas settlers into lasting communities.

John and Virginia Linney House
Refugio, TX
John Filmore Linney and his wife Virginia, both from pioneer Texas families, received this house as a gift from his father, Col. John Linney, in 1876, two years into their marriage. They raised eight children here and lived in it until their deaths. Twice relocated — in 1948 and again in 1986 — the house now stands as part of the county museum.
Empresario James Power
Refugio, TX
Born in Ireland, James Power reached Mexican Texas in 1823 and, with fellow Irishman James Hewetson, won empresario contracts to plant Irish Catholic and Mexican families along the coastal plain between the Guadalupe and Nueces. His recruiting voyage from Ireland ended in sickness and shipwreck, yet the colony endured. A friend of Sam Houston, Power signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and Constitution and later served in the Republic's Senate.

Refugio takes its name from Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio, the last Spanish mission founded in Texas, established in 1791 to draw Indigenous people of the coast into Catholic mission life. When Mexican Texas reorganized in 1835 and the revolution created new counties in 1836, Refugio became one of them, with the old mission town as its seat. The county was formally organized in 1837.
Irish Immigrants in Refugio
Refugio, TX
Refugio's roots reach back to Ballygarrett in County Wexford, Ireland, home of empresarios James Power and James Hewetson, who won Mexican permission to bring more than 200 Irish families to Texas in the 1830s. The first colonists arrived in 1834, surviving cholera and shipwreck-rough surf before settling near the old Spanish mission of Nuestra Señora del Refugio. Almost at once they were swept into the fight for Texas independence, and their descendants still farm land granted to their ancestors.
