Military Academy, 1915; in 1943, during World War II, was appointed commanding general of Allied Forces in Europe; served as president of Columbia University, 1948-1952; was President of U. The Story
Dwight D. Eisenhower, the thirty-fourth president of the United States, was born in this Denison house on October 14, 1890, the third son of David and Ida Eisenhower. A 1915 graduate of West Point, he rose to command the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II, later served as president of Columbia University, and won the presidency in 1952. The modest frame home marks the beginning of one of the 20th century's most consequential American lives.

Perrin Air Force Base
Sherman, TX
Planned in early 1941 as an Army Air Corps basic flight training field, this Grayson County base was still under construction when the attack on Pearl Harbor drew the nation into World War II. Its first class of cadets graduated in February 1942 at ceremonies dedicating the field to Lt. Col. Elmer D. Perrin, a Texas test pilot killed in the line of duty. For three decades pilots trained here flew on to serve in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam before the base closed in 1971.
Waples-Platter Grocery Company
Denison, TX
Founded in 1871 to feed the crews building the Katy railroad, this firm grew into Denison's first wholesale grocery house and, as Waples-Platter, one of the region's commercial giants. From its ornate 1885 headquarters on East Main—terra cotta lions' heads and cast-iron pilasters advertising its prominence—the company shipped its White Swan line across Texas. Its canning plant gave the nation Ranch Style Beans, the company's most enduring legacy.
E. M. Kohl Building
Denison, TX
Ernst Martin Kohl, a former German Navy captain, arrived in the booming railroad town of Denison in 1885 and built the first floor of this structure in 1893 for a grocery and saloon. He raised three more stories in 1909–11 as a family residence, and by the 1930s the building had become the Traveler's Hotel serving the nearby rail district. Later owners restored it, and it was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1975.
Forest Park
Denison, TX
Denison established Forest Park in 1872, the same year the town was founded as a terminus of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas ("Katy") Railroad, when Robert S. Stevens donated six acres on the condition it stay a public park forever. The park hosted the town's first civic celebrations and took its name from the woods that once covered it. During the bitter 1922 nationwide railroad shopmen's strike, the Texas National Guard pitched a tent city here — Camp Ellis — as hundreds of arrests were made among some 1,400 Katy workers.
