The initial stop on the first scheduled west-bound air mail flight was made here by Pilot Leon D. Smith on December 18, 1918. The site for the field was chosen by pioneer aviator Max Miller and was in regular use for air mail until 1925.

The Story
On December 18, 1918, this field hosted the first stop on the inaugural scheduled westbound air mail flight, flown by pilot Leon D. Smith. Chosen by pioneer aviator Max Miller, the site sat amid the ridges of central Pennsylvania — a crucial and treacherous waypoint for early pilots crossing the Alleghenies. It remained in regular air mail service until 1925, when advancing routes and aircraft moved on.
Why it matters
The transcontinental air mail was the proving ground for American aviation as an industry, and Bellefonte was one of the risky mountain stops where pilots turned experimental flight into reliable transportation.

In the 1920s and '30s, air mail pilots flew fragile open-cockpit planes through fog, storms, and mountain passes to carry the nation's mail by the fastest routes yet known — often at the cost of their lives. This marker remembers Jimmy Cleveland, an air mail pilot who died when his plane went down here on May 24, 1931. His crash was one of many that made early air mail among the most dangerous jobs in America.

As a mill owner and president of the Susquehanna Boom — the great log-catching works on the river — he helped turn the city's timber wealth into the mansions of "Millionaire's Row," many of which he built. An inventor as well, he patented the "herdic," a low, rear-entry public carriage, and made his own home at No. 407.

At Hollidaysburg, the 127-mile Juniata Division of the Pennsylvania Canal met the Allegheny Portage Railroad, an ingenious system that hauled canal boats over the mountains toward Johnstown, 36 miles west. The canal opened in 1832 and the railroad in 1834, together forming a continuous route across the formidable Allegheny barrier. Engineers marveled at the portage line, which climbed nearly 1,400 feet in just ten miles using inclined planes.
Anna Wagner Keichline (1889-1943)

Anna Wagner Keichline of Bellefonte broke ground in more ways than one. A Cornell graduate and suffrage advocate, in 1920 she became the first woman registered as an architect in Pennsylvania, designing buildings including the town's Plaza Theatre. She was also a prolific inventor, and during the First World War she served her country as a Special Agent in Army intelligence.
