This agricultural community was named for Corsicana businessman Bryan T. Barry, who developed the land deeded for the townsite by early settlers Dave and Effie Wright. The Barry Post Office was established in 1886, the same year the St. Louis, Arkansas & Texas Railroad came through the town. The first post office was housed in the general store operated by Owen Taylor, who also was the town's first postmaster. Henry Allison later served as rural mail carrier for 40 years. Early businesses in Barry included the First State Bank, which operated from 1909 until 1931, grocery stores, gas stations, drugstores, blacksmith shops, a newspaper office, a meat market, a cafe, and a hotel. In 1910, W. T. Woodruff and R. W. Varnell formed Woodruff and Co., which sold dry goods, hardware, and farm implements. Settlers were attracted to the area by its rich farmland, and by 1920 most of the land had been cleared and planted in cotton. Barry's first cotton gin was established in 1899 by Dan McCammon, and E. Y.Jordan and Jack Hodge also operated early gins. Methodist and Baptist churches were organized by the end of the 19th century, and the Barry School, which opened in 1895, served the area until 1958. The Story
Barry grew up where the rails met the cotton fields. Named for Corsicana businessman Bryan T. Barry, the town got its post office in 1886, the same year the St. Louis, Arkansas & Texas Railroad arrived, and clustered around Owen Taylor's general store. Settlers drawn by rich farmland cleared the land for cotton—Barry's first gin opened in 1899—and by 1920 the community supported banks, churches, and a school that served the area until 1958.
Why it matters
Barry is a classic railroad-and-cotton town of the New South, showing how a rail line and a cash crop conjured a whole community out of Texas prairie.

Petty's Chapel
Corsicana, TX
This corner of Navarro County took shape around the hardbottom creek crossings of an early route known as the Military Road, which carried travelers toward Corsicana, founded in 1848. Families like the Hamiltons and Braggs settled the sandy uplands, and in 1893 local Baptists raised the Petty's Chapel church that still holds services more than a century later. The community was reshaped by the discovery of the Corsicana oilfield in the late 19th century and by the county poor farm, established here in 1890 and closed in 1944.

Blooming Grove began as Gradyville in the 1860s, a village named for the Grady brothers who ran the general store that also held the post office. When the Cotton Belt Railroad arrived in 1888, the whole settlement shifted a mile northeast to the tracks, took the name of its 1871 postal station, and incorporated in 1890. A rural cotton-and-cattle town, it grew around its churches, its 1888 Masonic lodge, its schools begun in 1869, and its newspaper.
Corsicana
Corsicana, TX
When the Texas Legislature created Navarro County in 1846, a committee chose this 100-acre tract for the county seat, naming it Corsicana for the Corsican homeland of patriot José Antonio Navarro's parents. Early settler Hampton McKinney's log cabin doubled as school, post office, courthouse, and tavern. The railroad's arrival in 1871 sparked explosive growth, and by the late 1800s Corsicana was a pioneer of commercial oil and natural-gas fuel.

A South Carolina native, Robert Newton White moved his family to the blackland prairie in 1845, the year Texas joined the Union. When Navarro County was organized in 1846 he was elected its first county clerk, holding the post a decade while also serving as Corsicana's first postmaster and helping found a Cumberland Presbyterian church. A civic booster, he lobbied railroads to reach the young town, and his first home here was a simple log cabin.
