The town of Bangs was established on the route of the Santa Fe Railroad, which deeded land to the city for a school. The first school building, a two-room frame structure on the south side of the railroad tracks, was completed in 1892. Miss Clemie King was the first teacher; enrollment totaled 35 pupils. A new 2-story stone structure, built on the north side of the tracks in 1903, replaced the first building. Over the years the school system has grown and built additional facilities. Nine other area schools have consolidated with the Bangs school system since its founding. (1992)

The Story
The town of Bangs grew up along the Santa Fe Railroad, which deeded land for a school and helped anchor the young community. Its first schoolhouse, a two-room frame building, opened in 1892 with a single teacher, Miss Clemie King, and 35 pupils. A larger two-story stone building followed in 1903, and over the decades nine surrounding rural schools consolidated into the Bangs system.

Settled in 1857 and given a post office the next year, Brownwood grew from a frontier townsite donated by Greenleaf Fisk into a Central Texas hub for cotton, farming, and trade. The Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1885 and the Frisco in 1890, and by 1889 two colleges — Daniel Baker and Howard Payne — called it home. During World War II the huge Camp Bowie military post operated here from 1940 to 1946.
First Baptist Church of Bangs

This congregation began in 1883 when the Rev. A. R. Watson gathered a small group of Baptist worshipers in the community of Mukewater. When the Santa Fe Railroad created the new town of Bangs in 1890, the church moved there and took the name First Baptist Church, building its first sanctuary in 1891 on land granted by the railroad and a larger one in 1923. It has served Bangs with worship, education, and outreach ever since.
Thrifty
Brownwood vicinity, TX
The community of Thrifty sprang up after the Army established Camp Colorado, a frontier defense post on Jim Ned Creek, in 1857. When troops withdrew as Texas seceded in 1861, settlers like the Mullins family faced the dangers of the frontier alone, but the area flourished after the Civil War with a hotel, gins, mills, and a mercantile store serving nearby farmers and ranchers. The railroad's bypass in 1886, paired with a hard drought, drained the town of its people and its purpose.
Route of Old Military Road
Santa Anna, TX
Opened in the 1850s, this military road carried supply trains and cavalry along the chain of U.S. forts that guarded the Texas frontier, running from Fort Belknap on the Brazos down toward Fort Mason and Fort Clark near the Rio Grande. Notable soldiers traveled its route, among them Col. Robert E. Lee, who a decade later would command Confederate armies. The road knit together the far-flung outposts meant to shield settlers.
