Bangs Cemetery was established in 1905, as the railroad town of Bangs in Brown County was taking shape amid the farms and ranches of Central Texas. Community cemeteries founded in this era served as enduring anchors for the families who settled the land, recording the names of a growing rural population. Its designation as a Historic Texas Cemetery recognizes it as a repository of that local history.

Rocky Creek Baptist Church
Brownwood, TX
Eighteen people gathered under a brush arbor near Rocky Creek in August 1877 to organize this Baptist congregation, calling their first pastor and raising a one-room church by November. A larger building followed in 1889, and after a 1919 storm destroyed it, the members regrouped and rebuilt in 1921. The congregation has continued to grow and serve its Brown County community ever since.

The community of Thrifty sprang up after the Army established Camp Colorado, a frontier defense post on Jim Ned Creek, in 1857. When troops withdrew as Texas seceded in 1861, settlers like the Mullins family faced the dangers of the frontier alone, but the area flourished after the Civil War with a hotel, gins, mills, and a mercantile store serving nearby farmers and ranchers. The railroad's bypass in 1886, paired with a hard drought, drained the town of its people and its purpose.
Route of Old Military Road
Santa Anna, TX
Opened in the 1850s, this military road carried supply trains and cavalry along the chain of U.S. forts that guarded the Texas frontier, running from Fort Belknap on the Brazos down toward Fort Mason and Fort Clark near the Rio Grande. Notable soldiers traveled its route, among them Col. Robert E. Lee, who a decade later would command Confederate armies. The road knit together the far-flung outposts meant to shield settlers.
