Marker Inscription
Constructed in 1907 for Alex Brinkmann, this building housed the Comfort State Bank until 1960. Local stonemason Richard Doebbler is credited with the hand-cut stone craftsmanship of the structure. The Comfort Public Library was located here from 1961 to 1982. Features of the modified Richardsonian Romanesque building include polished red granite columns, a round-headed window, a corner entrance, and a blind arcade in the tower. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1988.

The Story
Built in 1907 for Alex Brinkmann, this handsome stone building housed the Comfort State Bank until 1960, its walls hand-cut by local stonemason Richard Doebbler. Designed in a modified Richardsonian Romanesque style, it boasts polished red granite columns, a round-headed window, a corner entrance, and a blind arcade in its tower. After the bank moved on, the structure served as the Comfort Public Library from 1961 to 1982.
Why it matters
It reflects the prosperity and architectural ambition of small Texas towns during the early twentieth century and was honored as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.

Arno Schwethelm Building
Comfort, TX
Built in 1916 by merchant Arno Schwethelm to house a leading Hill Country mercantile, this native-limestone building married a modern commercial function to the stonework of German immigrant craftsmen. Designed by San Antonio architect L. Harrington and raised by mason Otto Bartel, it even reused materials from an earlier structure on the spot.
Peter Joseph Ingenhuett Homestead
Comfort, TX
German immigrant Peter Joseph Ingenhuett (1833–1923) settled on a farm near Comfort in the 1850s, part of the wave of German settlers who gave the Texas Hill Country its distinctive character. After marrying Marie Karger in 1861, he moved into town and opened businesses along High Street—a hotel, saloon, and livery stable—and served nearly 25 years as postmaster. The small cottage behind the property was the family's first home until a larger house was built in 1888.
Ingenhuett-Faust Hotel
Comfort, TX
The oldest wing of this Comfort inn, trimmed with jig-cut brackets and a balustrade, went up in 1880, with an addition following in 1894—seven years after the railroad reached town. Both sections were designed by prominent San Antonio architect Alfred Giles. The Ingenhuett family ran the hotel into the 1900s before Louis and Matilda Faust took over from 1909 to 1946.
Karger Building
Comfort, TX
Saloon owner Ernst Karger had this building raised in 1913 next to his business in the German-founded town of Comfort. Its first tenant was Fritz Anderwald's pool hall, and over the years a succession of enterprises followed, including a cabinet shop that swapped the storefront for garage doors before a later restoration. The frame building's showpiece is its decorative pressed-metal facade, pediment, and siding, manufactured by the George L. Mesker & Co. of Evansville, Indiana.
